Koepi's XviD Codec 1.3.2

XviD is an open source video codec just like DivX. Most new movies and videos are being encoded with XviD. The XviD Codec is needed to play movies encoded by XviD. XviD is better than DivX. XviD codec allows you to watch (and create) MPEG-4 compatible video files. XviD is an MPEG-4 compatible codec, which produces very good video quality -- something that really competes with DivX. This version of the codec is built by Koepi -- there are several binary versions available, but as this seems to be the most popular one, that's why it is in on our site.

XviD is a continuation of Project Mayo and aims to develope a high quality open-source MPEG-4 codec. As you may already know, XviD comes from the same open-source project that was the basis for DivX 4.x/5.x, but instead of going all commercial, XviD remains open-source. The quality of the codec is extremely good, and encoding speed is very fast as well, so it is at least worth a try. We recommend Koepi's build for encoding/decoding XviD.

There is only a slight difference in picture quality between XviD and DivX. XviD offers more sharpness in the picture detail and overall a better performance. XviD, in contrast to DivX, is available for free. There are a lot of new features now, like the multithreading support. This will speed up encoding XVid files on PCs with multicore processors.
